posted September 15, 2008 @ 10:39 pm I met someone from Make Magazine in March this year, and we were discussing the fact that we owned the same laser etching machine. I was complaining about how annoying it was to align the machine using the built in ruler, when the other person suggested I just use the etching machine to print a better ruler. Only then did it strike me: I can actually make something with this machine. So from that a-ha moment on, we at Moonraker Design have been discussing how we should use the laser etching machine to construct something 3 dimensional. …
A Google search, which can show you how to make a pipe bomb in under 15 minutes, came up with nothing but this guy’s work. Kinda cool, but about as much fun as trying to print Lego. I’m the type of guy to blacken a grilled cheese sandwich - I want something bam-bam, no assembly required.
So I hit upon the idea of cutting it in slices. But how would they stack up? Enter my geekazoid friend’s inside knowledge of Star Wars arcana: check this crazy guy out  Star Wars Darth Vader sculpture puzzle So then the party really started… The search for a simple enough 3d model began with spheres, moved through cubes and various other useless x-ahedrons until we finally found this masterpiece It became time… HEY, YOU, PUT THE GUITAR DOWN… it’s not that kind of a party!@@!
Post-interlude: on the interweb we found this jamming model of everybody’s favorite love2hate chess piece … the pawn
Neither of us are any good with 3d software, so it took a bit of pointless clicking and endless Googling before we discovered a way to slice the model at regular intervals. We pretended to do some math -
We wanted a 9″ pawn, which by our calculation meant the base should be scaled to just fit in a square of 5 inches. At some point I should mention that earlier that day we had gone to the hardware/hobby store and were now proud owners of several sheets of 3/16″ and 1/8″ thick foam board, both of which you can cut with ease. Because we didn’t know how to export these slices fine enough to produce a vector image (the machine only laser cuts vector images), we exported each of our 43 slices to a raster image, and then traced a vector outline by hand (or mouse, rather) on the computer. In the middle we centred a 0.1″ thick square hole, where the rod that held the piece together would sit. Being programmers, we decided we were done when we got this far…
But then the coolness of the whole enterprise took over, and in just under 4 hours of hard labor, our firstborn (HINT:he’s next to the beer bottle) -
Of course, once he was done, his evil twin took less than 30 minutes to print and stack. And here they are, Will Smith n Martin Lawrence, our very own bad boys:
Soon we tired of being cooler than everyone else ON THE PLANET. We stopped PRINTING OUR 3D MODELS and spent time instead taking cool pictures - check them out and more on our photowall.
